Hello,
I posted a very long post years ago in regards to Vietnamese culture
and breastfeeding. My husband is Vietnamese and the oldest of 8
children. All were breastfed. The family is from the Central area
of Vietnam--really in the middle of nowhere. Even though
breastfeeding was the norm, culturally, children were weaned abruptly
at 1 year of age as it was thought that breastmilk turned bad at this
point.
When I was breastfeeding my first child, my mother-in-law told me I
should feed formula as it was easier. Well this was the case for her
daughters as my mil was the one who took care of their kids! By the
time I was nursing my second, who was a real sumo as a baby, she
would brag to everyone who commented on my son that it was due to
mother's milk. By my third and fourth, she would reminisce with me
about how she missed the sounds of a nursing baby. I guess she came
full circle.
