Cutting hair was what did the trick with my daughter after trying *everything* in and out the book for over a year when she was about 8-9 yo. She has an awfull lot of very fine hair, when tied into a tail it is as thick as her wrist. Still, she catches every louse within 100metres and working with children and groups does bring some within her range), but she can manage now.
Warmly,
Gonneke, IBCLC, MOM in southern Netherlands

I dealt with head lice with my daughter (now a teen) when she was a
preschooler. She has lovely long, curly hair and did so when she contacted
lice at her preschool. We tried combs, RID, sunlight, everything. After some
research and a visit to the pediatrician, we treated her hair - following the
directions exactly - with prescription lindane. Her pediatrician also suggested
cutting her long curly locks - which was devastating to her mom. So we did.
She was happy to be cooler in the summer - we live in California. A beautician
suggested tea tree oil (sold in beauty supply shops). We purchased a bottle
and used it occasionally for a few years to keep the nits at bay/prevent
reinfestation. I am not sure which of these methods worked - or the
combination of all of them. We also bagged up blankets, pillows, stuffed
animals, and so on for 2 months. And vacuumed and vacuumed. And sprayed
her car seat and washed clothes in hot water. Her brother and dad never had
a problem with lice, but I have always been told that boys are less apt to
contract it because they traditionally have short hair.
She is now 18, just graduated from high school, and again has those beautiful
curly locks.
