I work in a facility that specializes in transplants. It is a very involved
surgery. Pending the healthcare team doing the transplant, the medications
may prohibit her from breastfeeding. The pain medication dose is rather high,
and pending the mother, it can be more than a few days of pain medication.
You may be home in three days, but it is major surgery that is followed as an
outpatinet for months. She will have only one kidney and it will have to work
harder than before. The main issue is the fluid intake and output. She will be
strictly monitored for this. The fluid shift should theoretically impact her milk
production. She may be able to pump to keep milk flowing but she will
probably note a decrease in production. Once she is out of the "woods," she
may be able to build up her milk supply. I have had on client that successfully
accomplish this. She was very dedicated and her team was very supportive.
thanks Renee
