I agree with Linda that; "Babies who cannot latch and get milk from a
normal breast are not "confused"
- they are COMPROMISED in their ability to coordinate suck - swallow -
breathe effectively. A baby who cannot get milk at breast may be immature,
injured, drugged, and/or have some other problem that renders him or her
UNABLE to breastfeed effectively."
There are so many obstacles to breastfeeding in a hospital, not least of
which is the manner in which babies are born. I feel that the large number
of uncoordinated, non latching babies we are seeing could be due to the high
levels of stress hormones circulating in the baby after birth - compounded
by separation, weighing, bathing etc. These babies are unable to get "all
their ducks in a row" until they begin to de-stress and relax.
