Dear Abby's response was better than her responses to these types of
questions a few years ago. There is definite improvement as
breastfeeding becomes part of our culture. Indeed, she mentioned
several important things, for example, that this woman is the first,
not the only, nursing mom in this workplace. Women who are in this
position often feel like the pioneers they are and get a great deal of
satisfaction and pleasure knowing that they are blazing a trail for
others. Also, Abby mentioned getting together with other women in the
work place to suggest that the workplace arrange a nursing/pumping
space. People (mothers and their bosses) need to be educated that
bathrooms are inappropriate places for pumping or nursing. Once it is
explained, they are often quite understanding, accommodating and
creative about finding other space.
