Check the CDC website. Someone posted that link within the last day or two. Basically: yes she can breastfeed. If she is symptomatic, they do suggest a mask for mom and hand washing. If she can breastfeed, she can provide her pumped milk for her baby in SCN and the staff can handle it because - mom is washing her hands!
As for mom visiting babe in the SCN when babe can't come out to mom, it's the same as for any other maternal illness. The common cold is a contagious virus also.
More and more, we are getting the docs to write orders for SCN babies who are just on Abx to go OTM for most of the day, returning to Nsy only for assessment and medication, then OTM again.
Maybe that will work for you.

=============
Greetings from Indiana where the Swine Flu has hit. Our hospital is looking at
how to handle any OB pts who come in with symptoms, and if their babies
should be allowed to room in with them. My answer would be yes, due to the
enteromammary pathway and passage of antibodies to babies from their
mothers milk. Do you agree? What about formula fed babies? (unfortunately
we do have a few of these as well). My third question would be, if we have a
SCN baby whose parents don't often visit and may not have exposed their
baby, would it be safe to give the baby milk pumped during the time mom may
have the flu? I don't know if we should treat patients with Swine Flu any
differently than with any other flu. Any advice from all you out there whose
opinions I value greatly will be appreciated. TIA, Jan
