What I have been able to learn from workshops, conferences, professional
journals, and reliable books on breastfeeding is that introducing solids is
a social event rather than a need for improving nutrition in a breastfed
infant. There is also the need of some parents to keep up with what others
are doing, so they start solids earlier than is recommended. Years ago, I
remember reports of cases of children who were so allergic that they could
not tolerate any solids until the age of three and beyond. There was one
girl who had serious reactions and had to be hospitalized whenever anything
other than breastmilk was introduced into her diet. Her mother received
breastmilk from all across the USA and had several freezers to store it in.
Only after puberty, at around 13 years, was the girl able to consume some
solids.I believe it was five foods. The reports indicated that those
children grew well and seemed to be healthy on breastmilk alone. This is
such an interesting topic.
