Hello everyone,
I have been looking through the archives about breast refusal. I don't want to
make this too long so will try to shorten the story. Long labor, pushed 2+
hours, epidural anethesia (pump) so continuous. Failed to descend so
C/section delivery. Baby also has tongue tie. Mom large girth, breasts had
some growth and glandular changes during pregnacy but hand width apart.
Leaking colostrum and could express lots of colostrum day one. I gave the
baby colostrum by spoon on day one. Day two baby was begining to latch. I
could auscultate swallows during feedings.
Pediatrician clipped tongue tie. Baby developed jaundice and then would go to
breast and not suckle. Mom pumping and offered EBM from bottle but used
bottle paced method to illicit sucking. Photo therapy done discharged home
with bilibed. Baby will drink from a bottle but will not suckle at the breast.
Tried even a nipple shield and dropped breast milk on it and tried feeding tube
with breastmilk to bolus. She will not suck. Mom is pumping 2-4 ounces every
2-3 hours. I was worried that she would not have a full milk supply because of
the shape and history of her breasts but so far she is doing ok, baby now 1
wk out. Mom does skin to skin every day. She cuddles and she hold the breast
in her mouth but she will not suckle.
I am no mail currently on Lactnet so please offer your suggestions to my
private email.
Thank you in advance,
Theresa Klein RN, IBCLC, RLC
