Hi all,
If someone can send me that brochure *straight away*, I'll be happy to read
it and bring it with me to the meeting with our regional sales rep, for
which the date will probably be set tomorrow.
We (my region collegue and I, both from the Dutch breastfeeding association
as well) have several issues we want to tackle during that appointment and
renting pumps through unskilled people/companies is definitely going to be
one of them. Advertising in breach of the Code can be added. We asked to not
only see the rep, but meet up with the Medela lc (who is the Dutch IBLCE
member...) as well. They agreed and we'll set a date tomorrow. I had the rep
on my voicemail today, as I switched off my mobile phone. Together with some
volunteer collegues we had such a sad, sad funeral today...
A collegue of ours had her 4th and 5th baby Monday 25th, second boys' twin,
with a C-section. They were 36 weeks and both doing well. Her husband
registered the babies at the city council, brought the names and other
information for the birth announcement cards to the printer, went back to
the hospital to join his wife and newly born sons and started feeling not
well. A couple of hours later, he died...
She is now a widow mom with five children and a cesarean to recover from...
It was just heartbreaking to see her and her little kids (girl of about 7 or
8, two boys of almost 5 and the childbed nurse with the newborn twins in the
pram...) at the grave. You'd wish you could take something of the burden
from her shoulders, but there is so much that she will just have to do by
herself. She's over 300 km away from here, so practically speaking, I can't
be of any assistance. I hope and pray for her that people will remain
faithful and steady around her and her children for the years to come...
Let's all count our blessings and really feel the gratitude for being
together and healthy and able to speak up for a new generation...
Warmly,
Marianne Vanderveen, Netherlands

Subject: [LACTNET] Medela brochure
If you care to try once again to get the attention of Medela by writing
directly to them, be my guest(s). That has been very unsatisfying in the
past, IME, since they either don't reply or send a standard form letter
after a couple of weeks. We can be fairly sure, however, that Medela does
follow discussions here on Lactnet, so this may be a way to reach them.
It seems to me that the company has decided to try a new marketing strategy
that represents a significant break from its former policies. They are now
indistinguishable from several other companies who have decided to carve out
a niche in the 'breastfeeding products' market and toss the Code to the
winds. Common to all of them is the poor information, generally appalling
illustrations if breastfeeding is shown at all, and a wealth of things to
buy that will save you from all the difficulties you are bound to run into
in this expensive, challenging and inconvenient practice called
breastfeeding.
I will be interested to see if the JHL continues to accept adverts from
Medela.
If there is someone from Medela's corporate management reading this, please
feel free to contact me via the listmother address and I will be happy to
bring you up to speed on the non-responses I have had when giving serious,
well-considered feedback to the company in the past.

whose personal non-favorite Medela ad at the moment is the one in the latest
JHL, for a breast pump that represents a 'new' kind of 'freedom'.
