In response to the responses about the "lazy" nurser. I apologize if any one
of you think I was meaning that at all in a malicious way, meaning that the
baby was purposefully sabatoging breastfeeding, such as a being greedy or
not wanting to nurse. I am extemely sensitive to the needs of my moms and
babies. I am beyond supportive and encouraging to my mom's. I work to build
their' confidence, not break it down. I comment repeatedly how much their'
babies love being at the breast and "look how they enjoy it". So, it really
bothers me to think that a colleague may think I am using unacceptable
terminology. I will admit it was not the best of choice of word, however I
was thinking I could speak loosely and vent, so to speak, in this setting, but, I
will be very careful of my choice of words from here on out.

As far as the baby goes, he is doing better after the frenotomy. I have
considered that perhaps the frenotomy needs to be done more thoroughly as
the phrenulum is still a little tight. I would love another LC's pair of eyes. The
closest is about an hour away and frankly, I don't know if mom is up for it. I'll
talk to her about it. I was hoping some words of advice might help a bit. He
is being evaluated by pedi pt today and has seen the Dr. a number of times.
As far as we can tell, he is healthy, no neuro defect, etc. He is sleepy. After
a conversation with Linda Smith today, perhaps it is labor medications that
have not worn off or maybe his dates were off. All I know is, I am doing my
best to be supportive to the family and I am monitoring them closely. I am
only encouraging mom to discontinue supplements during feedings when he
has nursed well. Pumping and supplementing are only adding to her work load
right now, which she is not managing well. I am trying to build her confidence
up and I want her to be able to identify when her baby is satisfied at the
breast and does not need a supplement. When he transfers 2 ozs at the
breast, he's satisfied. She is pumping and will continue to pump when he is
not waking to eat. Her supply is good. She is just really discouraged and
overwhelmed and I want to fix something for her that I really think only time
can heal.

So, once again, I thank anyone for thier' support and/or ideas.

Laura
