Pat, you asked for it, so here goes. Everyone in Norway above the age of
about 8 weeks is encouraged to take one teaspoon of pharmaceutical grade cod
liver oil daily. No distinction is made between breastfed or other babies.
No other supplements are recommended for term babies, but premature babies
and babies with birthweight under 2500 g are prescribed iron supplements and
multivitamin supplements from very early on. The evidence for this practice
is not strong and I believe the policy will be revised before long, at least
on multivitamins.

Since there is little sunlight for several months every year, and since even
the sunny months may be so chilly that a small child can't have much skin
exposed, there is a strong rationale for dietary supplementation with Vit D.
Cod liver oil supplies DHA and ARA too, as well as Vit A.

While the recommendation is for cod liver oil, there are also liquid
multivitamin preparations on the market, full of artificial colors and
flavors, and people who can't bear the sight of cod liver oil, use them
instead. But the recommendation is for cod liver oil.
