I just came from the ILCA conference and maternal and infant sleep were
addressed by one of the speakers Libby Rosen, BSN, ABD, IBCLC. According
to this topic we have been mislead by folks who write books like "the baby
whisperer" and "baby wise". I couldn't agree more. We are a selfish society in
general. Think about it. We need to slow down and not try to get a million
things done during the day. We need to sleep when baby sleeps (naps) and
eventually according to research babies will change their sleep from day to
night by a few months. Most baby's sleep an average of 14 hours/24. Usually
only 6 hours is at night. It's the folks who write about the forementioned
books that should be appalled at what they are telling new parents.
Being a mother myself, was the most unselfish thing i have ever done. It
wasn't about me anymore. Ya, I loved getting 8 hours of sleep. But having
my daughter changed that, and it changed me even more. Parenting is about
giving up our desires to meet the needs of a baby human. They need us. Not
just during the daylight, but just as much if not more when the sun goes
down. I personally am a big advocate of co-sleeping. It just felt like the right
thing to do. Keep my baby close.
off the soapbox now.
glad to be home and in my own bed,
robin
