Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

OK so we know reducing cow's milk or eliminating it completely from mum's diet can alleviate symptoms of colic.

I have been reminded that oxytocin causes milk release not production.

Also oxytocin does not survive past the stomach.

So we are back to reducing cow's milk probably only works due to allergy/mum's leaky gut.

OK so we don't know the effect of added bovine growth hormones which are proclaimed as safe but which were probably not tested on breastfeeding women!!

Could there be something in cow's milk which causes an increase in the amount of breast tissue in a woman - but that doesn't explain reduction of milk easing symptoms unless allergy also involved.

I am so interested in this as I have a lot of women ringing me with baby seeming to struggle with too much milk. Swapping sides less often seems to help the problem. However the old argument abount too much lactose and not enough lactase doesn't make as much sense to me as it did when I first read about it 13 years ago. And I want to try and explain to these mums why I am suggesting swapping less often.

Silent reflux appears to be a problem with some of these women too - I had not even realised it could be a problem until recently (scary as I am supposed to know lots). The problem for these women being that doctors don't seem to know how to treat breastfeeding babies and subscribe Gaviscon which seems to be a real problem to administer to breastfeeding babies.

Look many thanks for all your help with this ruminating about cow's milk and its link to colic.

I will keep reading and learning (hopefully. I will keep taking fish oil!!)

Love,
