I just want to say thank you for this beautifully written letter regarding
working mothers. I work as a hospital based LC and when a mother tells me
that she is staying home with her baby, I tell her that she has my utmost
respect and support and that this the most important thing she will do with
her life. (This is in the privacy of her room, as I would never want to
offend another mother who felt she had to choose differently-I am supportive
of these mothers,as well)
I know that societal pressures often lead mothers to return to a workplace
outside of the home, but I wish that someone had suggested to me with my
first child that I did not have to return to work. I am saddened by a lost
opportunity.
Universal Health Care will certainly make it more economically feasible for
mothers to stay home, but framing the issue to place the value on
mothering/parenting that is deserved, is the challenge of our century.
Thank you,
Carol Mulligan RN. IBCLC
