Yes, I do think we are teaching too much.  But sometimes time constraints do 
dictate how we interact with mom and baby.  I spent 4 hours yesterday 
facilitating a self-attachment.  Yes, I did some teaching during this time - 
or rather baby did!  I very rarely have the time to do this.  Baby had not 
latched since birth - needed food - mother received no help in hospital and 
had never been around breastfeeding babies....

With so many myths and unrealistic expectations around, -(and *those* 
books) - mostly new parents need to unlearn accepted "truths" before they 
can use their own instincts and common sense.
