At least 20 years ago I either heard a talk or read an article in which it
was stated that every time the baby's lips brush the mother's nipple, it
sets off a reaction through the gut and there is a measurable fall in
bilirubin level in the baby. The story of the baby who got visibly less
jaundiced just before having a big meconium stool, is probaby an example of
this. Bilirubin is excreted through the gut.
I want to say it was Marshall Klaus's talk or article I remember, but that
sounds contrived.
