Speaking of night weaning...
Has anyone else noticed a trend towards mothers believing that this is
something they are supposed to do, not necessarily for fear of caries,
but for cultural reasons?
I have been seeing this quite a lot. The question is usually phrased
in terms of "WHEN should I night wean?" The assumption is that it is
simply something everyone does.
I think that it may be related to more mothers nursing for longer
(increased duration), which is of course a good thing. I get the
feeling, though, that they consider it a hardship (is that the right
word?) to nurse at night, but are willing to continue doing so during
the daytime. There is a perception that night-weaned children fall
asleep quicker and sleep longer. This may be true IF the child is
developmentally ready, but in that case he would be doing it on his
own.
