I've been teaching a LOT in the last month - mostly to WIC staff and Peer
Counselors - and it's interesting how I then learn something just by
becoming more aware of what I'm teaching. Recently we have been discussing
infant feeding cues and infant satiation cues.

Of course we had our participants write and later discuss the cues they
easily recognized - hand to mouth, sucking sounds, etc..

Then at 4:30 this morning I realized that my grandson did not give ANY of
those cues when he was hungry! He was in his mother's arms, so he didn't
have to - he just fell, lunged or bounced to her breast - and mom would "get
it" and made the breast available.

So my thought is that we have been teaching that "crying is a LATE sign of
hunger" - but we probably should say that all the other signs we list are
necessary for babies because (in my culture and country) we have
systematically removed from the baby the most basic of method of
communication - go for it!
