I am working with a mom who is one month out. When her milk came in she developed a lump in her upper inner quadrant. She treated it with heat and massage but it did not resolve. At two weeks she experienced severe body aches and her doc put her on antibiotics for mastitis. She never had a temperature. It is neither painful nor red. She had an ultrasound at 2 1/2 weeks which showed "no fluid collection to suggest an abscess", but the lump was still there. I spoke to her four days after the US and recommended castor oil compresses. After the first one the lump had gone down by about a third. She continued to do the castor oil compresses but there was no further reduction in the lump. I saw her for the first time yesterday. The lump got softer with feeding but I did not feel it changed in size. I'm thinking it could be a galactocele, but wouldn't that have shown up on the US? We are talking about US treatments, but I want to see what happens if she dos nothing to it for a couple days. She has been doing massage, heat and pumping. The pumping increased her supply and the lump got larger. She has also taken Lecithin for the last week.
If anyone can think of anything I am missing or suggest any treatments, I would love to hear anything.
