Dear Friends:
Michel Odent was doing a study about 20 years ago, looking at weight loss in
homebirthed babies. He found that 30% of them never lost any weight at all.
I don't think that the research continued or was published.
The weight loss considered "normal" is actually common. 'Common' and
'normal' are two very different concepts.
As most babies in the US are born in hospitals, the public (and most
healthcare professionals) view the hospital-born baby as "normal" because
those babies are the most commonly seen.
Generally, hospital-born babies are stressed in varying degrees. Taken from
their mothers, handled by strangers, subjected to painful procedures, and
given the wrong food. (From the CDC, 25% of all breastfed babies are fed
formula by 2 days of age.) It is amazing that as many women are
breastfeeding in the US as are!!
warmly,
