I assume you are asking me, Marianne. Let me share a little of my
story. When the word came down that Ameda was being bought by Evenflo,
my first thought was that I would need to quit my job. On a personal
level, I was not willing to work for a Code-violating company. I was
asked by our general manager my feelings about Ameda's purchase, and I
told him this. I said that I had really enjoyed my job and hated to go,
but that there were ethical issues that were more important. The other
IBCLCs who work for Ameda were asked the same question and gave the same
answer. It was after this that I was called into a personal meeting
with Evenflo's CEO and was told that Evenflo had made the decision to
become Code compliant and was asked to contact Marsha Walker to begin
this process.
I believe that Ameda's LCs influenced this decision. However, all
companies are not the same, and I think it's safe to say that Medela has
a different corporate culture. I don't know if the same would be true
there. And I don't know presume to know what's in the hearts and minds
of the Medela LCs with regard to the Code. Despite the fact that
supporting the Code is part of our IBLCE Code of Ethics, it seems clear
that some Lactnet posters consider the Code irrelevant or outdated and
do not support it.
Personally, I think if all IBCLCs fully supported the Code it would make
a huge difference, even here in the U.S.
