Rarely is it necessary to remove the nipple to give the baby cueing a need
for a pause/break from feeding. Actually, removing a nipple can contribute
to oral disorganization, according to a SLP, IBCLC colleague, who has taught
us other ways to accomplish pauses without possibly contributing to or
causing disorganization. Other therapists I've spoken with concur with
avoiding removal - one almost became apoplectic (because of what it can lead
to orally) when I said some LC materials suggested removing to give a break.
We have clips of the other "break" techniques that we use with
presentations.
