A common question that I get from moms is "What are the risks of giving the
baby one bottle of formula at night, so that I can sleep?"
I would like to help them make an informed and evidence based choice. What I
am looking for is one article or publication that summarizes the risks of ONE
bottle of formula a day, in the developed world, with a clean water supply. In
what way might it compromise the protective component of breast milk
against autoimmune disorders? What are the risks of contamination of formula
with toxins like melamine? How does the introduction of formula influence the
development of proper gut flora, to what extent would it increase the risk of
SIDS or obesity or diabetes etc etc??? Does this list exist somewhere? In the
absence of such a list, I would like to compile one, so any articles that you all
know of on the topic would be appreciated.
I am NOT looking for evidence about maternal supply and possible dips or risks
of plugged ducts, mastitis etc. In other words, I want a research based
discussion of the risks of the introduction of one bottle of formula to the baby,
aside from the effect that it has on the mother and the impact that disrupting
maternal supply might have on the baby.
Thanks,
Kathy Lilleskov RN IBCLC
