I am hoping someone can help me...
A coworker of mine is due to have her baby in about 3 weeks and has had
problems in the past with oversupply issues. I want to try and help her this
time, and any suggestions would be helpful.
When she delivered her first child she ended up giving it up because she was
miserable with engorgement. Within a few hours of birth she was becoming
engorged and producing large amounts of milk. She proceded to continue filling
up and was so miserable at home, even with frequent feedings, cabbage
leaves and ice packs. I have never seen anyone produce this much milk and be
so miserably engorged. An engorgement that would never go away, even after
several weeks of attempts at continuing to nurse.
She is pregnant now and is worried about an oversupply again and very much
wants to nurse this time. At 5 months gestation, she was already leaking
(large amounts) and feeling very full and it has continued throughout the
pregnancy. Any suggestions? I thought that I would have her start out this
time with the block nursing.
Thanks.
Cathy RN-IBCLC
