I try to explain to moms that if they would like to have some alcohol
while nursing, to avoid drinking more than 1 serving every 1-2 hours. I
explain that the more alcohol felt in their brains, the more they
alcohol the have in their breastmilk. So, if they feel inebriated, it is
best to pump and dump. Once the brain feels clear, most of the alcohol
has left the breastmilk too. I explain that if they drink no more than 2
servings over 3-4 hours, they should be fine. I find it easier in my
practice to strongly recommend no more than 2 drinks, to make it easier
for them to understand what the limits are (ought to be in an ideal,
healthy world), and to avoid drunk driving!!
Drinking more than 2 drinks, especially heading towards the 6-pack of
beer or whole bottle of wine, can be associated with a significant loss
of the MER, and a major decrease in milk supply. I usually see at least
1 case annually.
