There's no doubt that formula is already over-priced and that
non-marketed, non-advertised products could be a whole lot cheaper to
the consumer.
In the UK, formula is tax free, as are all 'non luxury' food items.
I dont agree that the consumer should pay a high (in monetary terms)
for using formula. The poorest sections of Western societies already
pay a disproportionately larger price (in all terms) for not
breastfeeding.
If taxes were added to formula, the consumer would pay them.
It would be a cruel irony if Western governments, who permit so many
marketing transgressions on the part of formula manufacrturers, who
don't ensure sufficient training for healthcare professionals, and
who do very little to remove other barriers to breastfeeding, were to
make the only alternative more expensive.
