Perhaps most effective would be citing the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine
protocols on use of analgesia and anesthetics in breastfeeding mothers.

It can be found on their web site under the protocols tab.

Since it is an organization of physicians only, perhaps it will carry more
weight. The paper itself is thoroughly referenced and even suggests that
midazolam (generic name of Versed) is preferred over other drugs since it is
short-acting.
You can join Dr. Hale's discussion board from his web site. Lactation and
medical professionals get free membership. You can also e-mail him at his
Texas Tech address, easily found on their web site and he answers quickly. I
would bet that he has run into this before and the doctor would respond
better to Dr. Hale himself.
You might also consider giving him anecdotal evidence of mothers who have
taken Versed and nursed immediately and do not in fact have dead babies.
What inciteful language!
Good luck!
