Choosing a bottle nipple and rating its flow is more difficult than just selecting a nipple hole size. Things that affect flow rate include the firmness of the nipple material and the shape of the hole in the nipple. It is also affected by the vacuum strength of the baby and how the baby uses his tongue and jaw. For instance, a baby who compresses may get more milk from some bottle nipples than others. A baby with a stronger suction will get milk out faster than with a weaker suction. I've tested this on various bottle nipples and found it to be true. I have been doing an extensive literature review on bottles, breasts, suction, rating systems for testing sucking capabilities etc. It is fascination what is out there. When I get done, perhaps I'll post my findings if there's any interest.

Subject: slow flow nipples

I am wondering what kind of slow flow nipples hospitals are using?
Unfortunately, we have a few MD's who do encourage some supplementing in the hospital, especially with phototherapy. The nipples we are using have quite a fast flow and would like replace them with a slow flow.
TIA.
