I really don't understand why the milk is the suspect dietary item and needs to
be examined by creamatocrit. He actually gains weight on milk, so why does
the pediatrician think it is not fatty enough? He was gaining well enough until
6 months, which I assume is when some solids started displacing his milk, so
why would the assumption be that the problem is with the milk not with the
solids.... What about examining the other components of his diet? If he eats
low calorie peaches and peas all day. fills up on them and then takes smaller
amounts of breastmilk, perhaps he just doesn't have enough calories in his
diet. Has anyone really closely examined the foods he tolerates, the amounts
he takes and the calories he consumes.I know you say that the mother is well
informed about diet, but it can be hard to find foods to fatten up a baby with
all the foods that have been removed from his diet. Also, he could be taking
12 feedings a day, but getting only 1.5 oz per feeding, which would only total
18 ounces - not enough to put weight on an active toddler, if his other
calories are restricted in some way.
What if they find that the breast milk isn't rich enough by their calculation - it
is the one food he gains weight on, so what are they going to do with that
info???Take away his breastmilk? I guess if she has tons of extra milk they
could fraction off the fatty component as it sits and give that to him, but
couldn't they do that anyway without a creamotocrit? Does the mother have
a lot of residual breastmilk when he is finished eating? Can she express
anything or does he consume essentially all that she makes?
Kathy Lilleskov - still mystified in Brooklyn....
