I think it is easy to explain this statistics. After I had my latest baby
about a year ago, I nursed her in the delivery room and we stayed together
for a while. Then we were told that because of some insurance regulations
nether I nor my husband were allowed to take the baby up on the maternity
level. We were assured that the baby would be with us again as soon as we
get there. My DH was not allowed to go with the baby.
Well , when we got to the maternity ward the nurses told us that they do
not know what we were promised and they do not care . The baby is under a
warmer and will be there for the next 3 hours. They also told me the "good
news" , she will not be hungry , she was given glucose water. It took me
over an hour to get my baby back. All of this was done despite doctors and
my instructions , despite the clear "breastfed only " sign , and there was
no indications either for warmer or glucose water , my DD weight 8 lb , was
nicely pink and lively. We were told that it was the matter of policy. The
question why they lied to us was never answered.
As you see in this case despite our efforts and in the true absence of
need my baby was " fed something other than human milk " before six hours.
