I have a mom who got to me at 3 mo pp with her last baby – very low milk
supply – no known reason. LC’s who had worked with her initially (first 3
days and on until she was so frustrated she found me through a friend) never
had her to any kind of blood work to rule out low thyroid, low prolactin –
nothing. They threw herbs and reglan at her with minimal milk supply
results but yucky depression results. By the time she got to me she had
about 1/3 supply and was pumping, using an SNS at breast and baby was NOT
doing well on ABM – he was GREY and not happy at all. We got her donor milk
ASAP, baby pinked right up and did great and the donor was able to provide
him with milk until well after 12 months of age! She got domperidone and
that helped a bit – upped her supply to about ˝.
If I remember correctly, there was no obvious sign of hypoplasia. She used
clomid to get pregnant (not sure what the dx was for infertility) but got
pregnant easily – first time.
She called me yesterday – is 16 wks along with #2. :-) Again she used
clomid – got pregnant immediately. I’d like to have a good idea of what to
look for, test for, etc, before the new baby is born. Obviously we will be
keeping a close eye on baby at birth (due date Jan 1, 2009!). But I’d like
to be able to prepare a tad sooner!
What are some good questions I can ask? I plan on doing the Low Milk supply
questionnaire to see if we can rule out other hormonal issues…but I feel
like I need something more…
Thoughts?
Warmly,
Jaye
