What ever happened to the advice the community midwives that I went
out with who never advocated for a mother to leave the house for the
first week after a baby was born? The UK had/has some of the best
post partum support because midwives visited moms/and babes at home
for the first 10 days, a visit nearly each day in most cases in the
area I trained in back in 1993/94. This is quite sad. New moms
definitely shouldn't be out shopping in those early days. And 20
minutes isn't long enough especially if you are having problems.
Even where I live (Vancouver BC) new mothers get home visits by
community nurses for as long as they need them and only have to go out
for doctors visits, usually at a week PP. I know its not like this
everywhere here. I was even offered a home visit at 8 weeks PP, after
being signed off by my midwives, by the nurse who did my daughter's
vaccinations. Community nurses don't normally visit when a midwife is
caring for a family.
