Hi there,
I could use some help here. I work with a pediatrician who lets just say is
not "breastfeeding friendly". She says that the AAP position on sidelying
causes babies to choke and get ear infections...ie no cosleeping. I want to
give her information on this but I have looked all over the AAP website and
can't find anything to fit this situation precisely. I always encourage moms
and babes to sidely in the early hours and days and let baby led latching
happen. I guess she disagrees w/me and later tells parents not to practice
this type of nursing position because of my statement previously.
I don't want to alienate this MD, because I work with them and I see lots of
this MD's pts. I also hear from others that (MD) gets upset when the parents
seem to listen to us (LC's) about such things as tongue ties, supplementing at
the breast when it is ordered and not using a bottle. I don't want to be at
odds w/this Pediatrician but I need evidenced based research about the ear
infection issue. I know all about the anti-infection properties in breastmilk,
but I need some study specific to this. It makes for a tense work
environment. Can anyone give me some articles, especially if it comes from
the AAP. I feel like my hands are tied. I find tongue ties, yet she thinks it is
out of my scope of practice to talk to the parents about this. Yes, I've
shown her the IBCLC's scope and had meetings w/said ped and my nurse
manager.
I believe in mutual respect, and I am trying very hard not to be direspectful,
or over-ride the chain of command.
help,
frustrated in California
