I'm not sure if the  terms came from anyone other than myself or if anyone
else does (I know my students at UCLA LC program use them because I tell them
about it) .
This is how it got started years ago I was speaking with Dr. Chris Wade (my
physician mentor at Kaiser) about a bad case of bilateral mastits. Mom was 10
days post partum and he asked all sorts of questions: cracked nipples ever
(no), how's her vaginal discharge prolonged ruptured membranes etc... and he
explained the concept that some mastitis cases are secondary infection
sites-- hence the terms ascending and decending mastitis were born
. Ruth Lawrence (I think) says to suspect beta strep in bilateral mastitis.
