In continuation of the discussion of literacy level of our clients, I have many Spanish speaking patients that not only do not read English, they are also illiterate in Spanish. We find that many of our Spanish translated handouts are of no use to them. We have suggested that perhaps we should explore handouts with pictures, but how is it possible to expressed many of the concepts of breastfeeding, pp care, infant care in pictures? We are currently trying to do the best that we can with translators. Unfortunately, just the basics are being taught in the limited time that our mothers stay with us. If anyone has any ideas for this problem, we would love to hear them!
