I am working with a mom that is breastfeeding about 3-4 times a day. The
child is 2.5 years old. Mom has 3 older children. 15 days ago the child was
eating some banana and started to choke on it. Grandma overacted a bit and
started to freak out, scream, and pound the child's back. Child has not eaten
anything solid since this incident except breastmilk and yogurt drinks in the 15
days. Before this the child ate VERY well. She ate a lot of food!
Now she will only consume about 2-6 small yogurt drink containers for a meal
through a straw. She is very verbal. She will repeat back anything you say
to her. She is about 31 pounds now. Mom took her to doctor today. There seems
to be no physical reason why she is not eating. Mom thinks she was very
frightened by this banana event. Doctor wants mom to stop breastfeeding. Mom
massages child's back at nursing times. I suggested massaging her back at the
kitchen table. Maybe even massaging around her mouth area to give her pleasure
instead of pain.
The doctor is concerned child is not getting fiber and will start to loose
weight. This is a big child right now. If you have any ideas please let me
know.
Thanks,
