Subject: [LACTNET] alcohol and BF
**Hi Melissa,
The presenter made the sweeping statement that mothers should *never* ingest
alcohol and breastfeed. I was a bit upset to say the least, but was not in
the mood to challenge her, esp. since I had nothing to cite at that moment.
Even now, I'm not sure what I would say,
**Did the presenter know about the clearance of alcohol from blood and how
that is the same in milk...?
Was the statement about the alcohol coming in the milk (and through that
route in the infant) or about mothers ingesting alcohol and not behaving
responsibly...?
The first can be explained as in my first line (don't feed within two hours
after drinking a standard glass), the second should not only go for
breastfeeding mothers, but for mothers in general.
I know what you mean by not having a quote at hand... That has frustrated me
so often! When you the statement is not right, you would like to make a
'presenter sweeping' statement yourself. ;o))
Kindly,
Marianne Vanderveen, Netherlands
