Clarification on testing protein levels in milk from mother:
Again, thanks for your thoughts.
Ann Marie

Somehow I think my explanation came off as a concern that my milk would be
HIGH in protein? It's actually the opposite. The disease currently causes
my BLOOD protein to be somewhat low. So the concern is that the milk
protein may be low.
I guess the key question is: Would low protein levels in my milk constitute
a reason not to breastfeed? Or deficiency of some particular type of
protein (which, I'm fairly certain they won't be able to test for, so it may
be a moot point)? If not, since my son is gaining weight, is there any
reason (aside, perhaps, from curiosity) to test the milk? The LC and
pediatrician I talked to at the hospital thought that as long as the baby
was growing and MY blood albumin wasn't dipping too much lower, there was no
reason to supplement or not breastfeed -- which would mean there's really no
reason to have my milk tested. My nephrologist's initial thought was that
if the protein was low, I needed to supplement. Period. But I am not keen
on taking his advice on the health of my child - he knows next to nothing of
breastmilk and pediatrics!
