Marit states:
"Then she kept on feeding on the right side
yesterday, and then apparently didn't feed during the night. When she
woke up this morning her left breasst was really really hard and the
problem had rather gotten worse. She didn't sound happy at all as she
rang."
Hi Marit, hopefully you got some replies privately, but in case noone has replied, here's a couple of thoughts;
Perhaps the mother expected the one time pumping to solve the problem right then and there- maybe it does sometimes, but further measures might be necessary. I'm sure you have already advised her to get some milk out of the left breast however she can (baby, pump, hand expression) to prevent plugged ducts/mastitis. Some other measures that might help are cabbage leaves to breasts, ice til inflammation calms, considering herbs if supply won't calm.
There was a recent conversation here cautioning about tamping the supply, I refer you to that.
Positioning- mom prone or very reclined with baby on top could be helpful til supply is down. If possible, find out how old baby is, how fast she is gaining, etc. Maybe she is having trouble handling the flow though it is normal?
You probably have some of this info, hope things are better now.
Mary Taylor
