Marianne: I was at a wonderful one day conference last Saturday. Susan
Ludington and Tina Smillie were the speakers. Susan had a picture showing a
crying baby held over a tub (apparently receiving its first bath) and a baby
crying on a warmer. The wording on the slide was: Protest-Despair Response
occurs when newborns are not in right habitat. This theory is classic Nils
Berman, so you may want to look into his work. I have heard him speak many
times and even had lunch with him one day during which we spoke of "the
baby's natural habitat" - mom's bare chest. He also uses the
terminology "natural niche" in his work to describe the relational position an
organism or a species has within the habitat.
I agree wholeheartedly with you that "The Oxytocin Factor" by Uvnas-Moberg
is a fascinating book. It should be recommended reading for all who work with
mothers/babies/families.
