As a mom whose children are now at risk for MS (their father diagnosed a few
years back as well as several of his family members) my concern is that this
baby has a genetic increased risk for MS - correct? One would think that
since MS affects the brain that the BF should be heavily encouraged in order
to reduce baby's risk of developing later in life. In fact, my feeling here
(and I have no research to back this up) is to encourage mom to breastfeed
for at least the first 21 months to give the child's brain the optimal
growth and development possible.
My boys are very scared (when they start thinking about it or when their dad
has a flare up of symptoms) about developing MS. My youngest truly believes
- not from anything I have said interestingly enough - that since he and his
brother nursed for so long (3 yrs and 4.5 yrs) that their risk is
significantly reduced. He came to me shortly after his father was diagnosed
and told me thank you for nursing him for 4.5 yrs because his risk was
reduced. Don't know where he heard it or where it came from - but he knows
what he knows what he knows.I certainly hope he is right!
I worked with a mom long-distance a few years back who had MS and her Dr
wanted her to wean ASAP and take some meds.the molecular weight of them was
huge, like 10,000+, meaning that the chance of it getting into breastmilk
was slim to none. With that info, she made the decision to take the med -
even with that info faxed to him from Hale, he still told her she'd be
better off weaning. ???? Whatever. She made her own choices.
Warmly,
