Dear Susan Burger:
I completely agree with you, and have posted about this in various places
since January (after hearing Drs. Helen Ball and Barbara Morrison tell us even
more about sleeping arrangements and skin to skin...at the Orlando 2008
International Conference), including at my workplace in a health department.
Of course. You can abstain if you want. That will prevent STD/pregnancy/etc.
And if you want to have sex (and most people will want to have sex because
that is hard-wired human behavior, linked to so much pleasure as to be
difficult to resist), have it in all these different ways that are safe. Use these
condoms.
Sure, use a crib. Put the baby in Siberia. That will be fine if you follow
all at least 7 guidelines for using a crib safely. Or bring baby to bed if you
want..........unless you smoke/
drunk/stoned/couch/waterbed....yadaadaada..........And baby sleeping next to mum is hard-wired. Milk release makes her
sleepy; milk ingestion makes baby sleepy.
You have choices.
Cars are dangerous too. We use approved infant seats to move our babies
safely in cars. So use a safe sleep surface if baby is in bed with you.
Or use a side-car sleeping arrangement, such as an "Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper".
Lots of choices; make them safely.
Looking for the hundredth monkey................:-)
warmly,
