If you look at the speech pathology type of texts, there are windows of
opportunity for oral feeding and transitioning of skills.

I have heard this idea before, about windows of opportunity. I wonder if
there is any evidence for these windows that are actually based on studies of
babies who are only normally fed, receiving no artificial feeding at all. Since
flow rates between human milk and artificial human milk are inherently
different even in the same bottle, and a baby who is artificially fed gets the same
tasting, un-adapting food every feed, every day, for months on end I don't
know if we can say that is true of normally feeding babies. These babies may
be bored and need ANY\thing that has a decent taste to it, they may have not
developed the same level of feeding skills, or sensory processing skills,
their guts are different, etc. I guess this explains why a mom whose baby is
gagging and vomiting on solids at 11 months was told by the local SLT highly
recommended by some IBCLCs, that it is her fault for not starting solids at 4
months. Meanwhile it turns out the baby's father had multiple esophageal
surgeries himself, but mom forgot this, since it was years ago. ( I am not the
mom's LC, I am simply her local LLL support in this situation.) I would really
love to find some evidence that this window thing actually applies to normally
fed infants who are offered appropriate complementary feeds around 6 months,
as AAP and WHO/UNICEF suggests...
