<<in almost all the families I've known - through family, friendships, and LLL - breastfeeding is influenced more by mainstream cultural voices the first time, but less with each subsequent child as we realize that the mainstream culture doesn't know what it's talking about. Has that been others' experience?>>

In the mothers I've worked with, yes, but not personally. Granted my oldest child has a disability and is developmentally about 3 1/2 so that has a lot to do with why he's nursing still. I'm not so sure I'd be comfortable nursing such a big otherwise. I often talk with mothers who nursed their first babies for a few months and nurse their last one well into toddlerhood b/c it's the last time and they didn't have the support/information to nurse past the first few months with previous children. In my case, it wouldn't surprise me too much if my second child were to wean before the first -- or if she keeps going longer just b/c her brother is and she doesn't want to miss out LOL (she's a bit competative at times).

Margo - currently nursing a 7 1/2 yo, 4 1/2 yo and 19 month old
