Maybe this has already been answered. The meconium is released when baby
has a stress event in utero. It may be in response to vagal nerve stimulation
or by cord compression and the baby had some kind of event that interrupted
the oxygen to blood supply. Sometimes overdue babies have this and there
are differing opinions as to why this happens. Sometimes it's just because the
baby wanted to have a bowel movement. But because it is so sticky and
because it can happen in the presence of O2 insult, we usually are on "high"
alert status. Hope that helps.
