I have permission to post. Mom and dad said "You can use our names if it will
help." (I don't need to do that. :) ) Mom is 43 yrs old. (Dad 47.) No previous
children for either. Decided after 3 yrs of marriage they were finally ready for
a baby. No luck at first year, then one, maybe two miscarriages (Spring of
2007.) Mom "gives up" and drops Maternity insurance. You got it, she's
pregnant a month later. Pregnancy has No problems whatsoever.

Baby born March 7th, 38+ weeks. PROM with mec staining. Baby Posterior
presentation (until knowledgeable L&D nurse came in and gradually
repositioned Mom, until baby flipped "Face Down.") 6 hr labor, 1.5 hr second
stage. Mom's doc was a Resident who called in Attending bc of mec staining.
Mom had no drugs whatsoever. At 90 minutes of pushing, Attending starting to
worry about heart tones and mec, so episiotomy and suction device was used
to assist delivery. Baby was out in 3 more pushes. Baby was rather vigorously
suctioned (Dad says he "thinks" there was mec in the airway, Mom says there
wasn't) Resident Doc immediately cuts cord, as she told Mom the "Mec is
getting to the baby via the cord." (I don't catch babies, so I don't know about
this. Does this happen?)

Anyway, baby is grunting at birth, Attending calls Peds, who decides
to "watch and wait" before sending baby to Special Care. Baby's breathing
levels out and becomes normal in a matter of a few minutes.

Baby weighs 9 Lbs 1 Oz! (5 ft 4, 110 lb mom!) 22 inches in length. 13 and 3/4
inch head circumference.

Baby goes to breast within minutes. NoCirc, no drugs, Mom and babe seem OK.
(with the exception of a rather nasty diagonal episiotomy.)

This woman is not only a client, but one of my very friends. So, I am a little
emotional on this one.

I see baby and mom 8 hours after birth. Kid is BIG. Seems to be retaining a
LOT of water. He is pretty sleepy, and has a large hemo and broken skin on
crown of head from suction device. I tell mom that baby is probably going to
turn a bit jaundiced, but not to worry. (I find out later that Mom is A+ blood,
and Dad is O+ Blood. Baby is O+) About 24 hours after birth, Moms calls to tell
me that baby is jaundiced, reading is at 7. Baby then becomes very lethargic,
and nurses say he is passing Uric Acid Crystals in urine. Then, someone in the
Nursery freaks her out, because one day old baby "only" has had two wet
diapers in last 24 hours. (along with 3 Mec stools.) Try to console her, telling
her that that is normal. LC in Hosp is a gem. She repeats to mom about
everything I have said, and that she wouldn't expect more than 2-3 diapers
wet the next day, either. Mom and Dad want to be discharged, someone in
Peds says "baby can't go home until he pees." Mom consents to .25 oz of
AIM "just to shut them up" then dad gets upset at Peds Resident and puts an
OZ of tap water into diaper to get them out of there. (Baby passes huge stool
and large urine void on the way home!)

(continued in next post, as first time was rejected for length.)
