In an ideal world, breast pumps would be covered by the Code (in all
countries) and not allowed to be advertised or sold directly to mothers.
Most parents that receive a pump as a gift or purchase one from a Baby/Toy
shop do not read the instructions and have no idea how to use it properly or
appropriately. The sale of these items via these outlets is huge and I
can't see pump companies changing their marketing plans. One common
solution for breastfeeding problems is the bottle - another now seems to be
the pump.
I do have pumps to hire (as a convenience as it's not easy to find them
here). However, when parents phone for a pump I often spend time
counselling re breastfeeding issues and discovering that the pump is *not*
the solution they thought it would be!
