Karleeen, you said "That's really interesting Magda and shows that the
skills of your peer counsellors are valued."
Just to clarify -- in the UK 'peer counsellors' are something different from
'voluntary organisation breastfeeding supporters'. Peer counsellors tend to
have shorter training, and work in a distinct geographhical area, and also
have a restricted remint as to what they deal with (social support,
attachment and postitioning, in many cases). Volunteers from one of the
four UK voluntary organisations (LLLGB is one of these four) have a longer
training, supervision, on-going study committments, etc.
It sounds nit-picky, but the term 'peer supporters' needs to be used
carefully -- because evidence about effectiveness often mixes peer and
voluntary support and sometimes shows different effectiveness and impact. I
think both are important -- and we debate the differences and boundaries a
lot within the UK. The BfN trains helpers (peer supporters) as well as
Breastfeeding Supporters. I think the other 3 vol orgs are also involved in
peer schemes as well as training their own volunteer counsellor/supporters.
Bet that is now as clear as mud!
Magda Sachs, Breastfeeding Supporter, BfN
