Read anything by Kerstin Hedberg-Nyqvist, RN, PhD. In her NICU in
Sweden, the preterm babies actually breastfeed. It takes time for them
to work up to transferring all the milk they need (they get the rest of
their ebm by tube), they need to be stable, and they do get fortifiers
if they are very small and need them, but they breastfeed as early as 28
weeks gestation. She has some wonderful stuff about cultivating feeding
competence in preterm infants (as opposed to waiting for them to mature).
