Dear Friends:
I worked with a mother with a history of lactation failure with her first
baby. Her story was of the all-too common hospital barriers, complicated by
recovery from a cesarean section and a return to paid employment at 8 weeks in a
place that wasn't respectful of her needs.
She has to return to paid employment at 8 weeks with this new baby.
She had a scheduled cesarean section for the second baby at the hospital
where I work as LC. She was determined that breastfeeding was going to work this
time! She described her anger after a staff nurse told her, "You will have
to give formula." She did s2s for hours, and breastfed so well that the baby
was 4 ounces over birth weight on Day 4, the day of discharge. (I suggested
she describe this incident on the hospital patient satisfaction survey,
including naming names.)
As part of my work, I am to call her at home a couple of times in the first
week. She is continuing to do well and is very happy about her success.
Another factor in her favor is that the business where she is now employed
has a lactation program; she bought a high grade pump for an amazingly low
price through that program. She'll be able to pump at work on a flexible
schedule, as long as she gets her work time in. She doesn't mind working later to
compensate. She has a private place to pump and easy access to a sink and
refrigerator.
A system can work well, and give an outcome that benefits all involved. This
mother had the benefit of respect and true assistance in her workplace, her
own experience and determination, along with hospital lactation
encouragement. Her workplace gains a dedicated, productive employee that feels good about
her employment. Everybody wins.
Yay!
warmly,
